LRMC Awards Nursing Scholarship to Lapeer East Grad
09/21/2009
LRMC recently named Lapeer East graduate Angela Diehle as its 2009 nursing scholarship recipient and her parents couldn’t be prouder.
.
Diehle, the daughter of Deborah and Lawrence Diehle of Lapeer, said it was her parents who influenced her to pursue a career in nursing.

“My dad has always encouraged me to find something I would enjoy doing,” she said. “I have a passion for helping people, which has inspired me to seek the nursing profession. It is also a career choice that will ensure continued job security.”

“This program will help me utilize my high energy and drive to succeed in the nursing environment,” Diehle wrote in her scholarship application. “There is constantly new technology and information to absorb. In addition, I would be able to use my kindhearted nature and great work ethic to help supply a service to those in need.”

The purpose of LRMC’s scholarship program is to attract diverse, high-achieving, high school students to careers in nursing, according to LRMC Human Resources Manager Brenda VanWagoner.

“Our program helps local students fulfill their dream of becoming a nurse,” VanWagoner said. “When they enter the program, they get exposure to the nursing profession both in the classroom and through direct patient care experiences.”

The LRMC program, introduced in 2004, awards scholarship funds to students who must enroll in, and complete a post-secondary academic curriculum leading to an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in nursing. Scholarship recipients make an employment commitment to LRMC upon completion of the degree program. To date, there are eight individuals enrolled in the program.

Diehle said one of the main reasons she applied for the LRMC scholarship was her desire to remain close to home and to continue to serve her community.

“I am highly involved in my community,” she said. “This curriculum allows me to stay in Lapeer where I believe I can continue to make a difference.”
