LRMC Receives Governor’s Award of Excellence For The Fifth Consecutive Year
11/18/2008

Lapeer Regional Medical Center (LRMC) has received MPRO’s, 2007 Governor’s Award for Improving Patient Safety and Quality of Care in the Hospital Setting. LRMC received the accolade for improving patient care for myocardial infarction (heart attack), pneumonia, CHF (congestive heart failure), Emergency Department care and Surgical Care Improvement. In addition, LRMC also received the Governor’s Recognition of Excellence for being a top performer in Surgical Care for the State of Michigan. “Award recipients are committed to providing Michigan citizens with high quality health care,” said Governor Jennifer M.Granholm.

“We are very honored to be recognized for the fifth consecutive year and we are especially honored to be recognized in the area of surgical care improvement,” says Bart Buxton, President & CEO. “This award acknowledges the efforts of our physicians and staff to provide the highest quality care and to make excellence possible. We continue to support our commitment to quality.”

The dedication and commitment of LRMC’s staff plays a significant role in achieving these types of prestigious quality awards. “For us to receive this award for five years straight is such an honor,” says Kathryn Lawter, Board Chairperson for LRMC. “With every award, it gives us impetus to achieve greater excellence.”

Furthermore, as a recipient of the Governor’s Recognition of Excellence, LRMC has been acknowledged for being a “top performing” hospital in each of the aforementioned award categories. Award criteria for the Governor’s Recognition of Excellence required that additional effort be put forward. This included a more intense approach to examining system processes, and in some cases, implementing system redesigns in order to meet defined criteria. With a focus on providing the right care at the right time, LRMC established a multidisciplinary surgical team to spearhead improvement measures using proven, evidence-based practices. “Together, our staff is demonstrating that we are providing the very best in medical treatment and care — the right care, each and every time”, says Monica Lareau, Director of Quality Management, Medical Affairs, and Case Coordination. “Our efforts have been enhanced through our collaborations with MPRO, Michigan’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization.” “This award exemplifies what we at LRMC strive for – the delivery of high quality care and performance excellence,” says Bart. The physicians and staff at LRMC are collectively dedicated to providing a level of quality care that exceeds national standards.

The medical staff at LRMC has worked diligently to honor their commitment to providing the best quality of care to the residents of Lapeer County. LRMC physicians have worked side-by-side with the staff to implement evidence-based best practices in providing patient care. LRMC is proud to provide nationally recognized care practices to patients. “Achieving this level of care requires a team approach,” says Dr. Robert Brengel, Chief of Staff at LRMC. “We are very proud of the extra work and combined efforts our entire staff has displayed and we plan to achieve many more of these recognitions in the coming years.” The Governor’s Award symbolizes the commitment LRMC has to the community and is a true demonstration of the consistent focus on delivering the safest and highest quality of patient care.

The Governor and MPRO have partnered since 2003 to honor hospitals for their efforts to embrace best practices to improve systems and health outcomes. “This is validation of our efforts to put solid clinical processes in place to continuously improve our quality,” says Tom Mee, Chief Nursing Officer for LRMC. The goal of the surgical care improvement project is to prevent infection. By closely monitoring the selection and administration of antibiotics, LRMC has maintained a best practice model for infection prevention. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Lapeer Regional Medical Center has received the Governor’s Award of Excellence.

The Governor’s Award has been enthusiastically supported by a variety of Michigan organizations and professional associations. MPRO and the Governor honored Lapeer Regional Medical Center at an award ceremony on October 29, 2008, at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
